From an early age, Romeu Bairos, a young man from Furnas (the volcanic village of the Azores), now 30 years old, decided that he would make music his main occupation. Having maintained a close relationship with this expression of islandic cultural identity, his family partly contributed to it. He studied piano as a child, then joined the Regional Conservatory of Ponta Delgada, where he studied clarinet, and went through several philharmonics on the island of São Miguel, until he moved to Lisbon and enrolled in the Hot Clube. After appearing on The Voice, it was in the midst of a pandemic that he received an invitation to write the song “Saudade”, which he took to the Festival RTP da Canção, side by side with Karetus. With the evolution of his work and career, Romeu Bairos is committed to a contemporary interpretation of traditional Azorean songs, in congruence with the vision of the artist he aspires to be.
